Urban Infrastructures & Metaphoric Voids - Streetscape Territories New York Masterclass

The Urban Infrastructures & Metaphoric Voids Masterclass is organised by the Streetscape Territories Research Project and invites graduating students and young professionals in architecture, urban design and urban planning to participate. The Masterclass consists out of a 5day research and design workshop,  combined with visits and lectures by local professionals and academics and this way introducing the participants to a local network.

The goal of this conference is to discuss the methodological challenges that come along with the historical gaze towards theory, by focusing on the concrete processes in which knowledge is involved. By screening the unspoken rules of engagement that the accounts of post-war architectural theory have agreed to and distributed, we want to point at dominant assumptions, biases and absences.

While participatory planning is widely hailed as a prerequisite for well-managed urban development and sustainability, this ideal can be difficult to implement in practice, due to the complexity of interactions between stakeholders and the difficulty of public users to realise a tangible ‘hand-on’ contribution. Incubators of Public Spaces aims to expand the opportunities for civic engagement in urban design through the creation of a user friendly online platform as an aid to local option generation and selection.

The research group Architectural Cultures of the Recent Past (ARP) of KU Leuven and KADOC, the Documentation and Research Centre on Religion, Culture and Society of KU Leuven, are organizing an international workshop on 3 – 4 July 2017 in Leuven on religion, urban planning and demographic change in post-war Europe as a prelude to an edited volume on this topic, to be published by an international academic press.
