Conceptions of Experience in the German Enlightenment between Wolff and Kant

24
Feb
2017

The purpose of this conference is to analyze the various conceptions of experience at play in eighteenth-century German philosophy between Leibniz's death in 1716 and Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. During this period, the classical Aristotelian definition of experience as cognition of singulars – to some extent still present in Wolff – became confronted with the Baconian and Newtonian accounts of empirical knowledge.

While participatory planning is widely hailed as a prerequisite for well-managed urban development and sustainability, this ideal can be difficult to implement in practice, due to the complexity of interactions between stakeholders and the difficulty of public users to realise a tangible ‘hand-on’ contribution. Incubators of Public Spaces aims to expand the opportunities for civic engagement in urban design through the creation of a user friendly online platform as an aid to local option generation and selection.

Bachelard Today – Bachelard Aujourd'hui

2017

Gaston Bachelard (1884-1962) can be considered as one of the most prominent French philosophers of the first half of the 20th century. During that period, and even into the 60’s and 70’s Bachelard’s work was widely read and his ideas influenced authors as diverse as Canguilhem, Simondon, Barthes, Foucault, Althusser and Bourdieu. More recently however Bachelard’s theoretical oeuvre seems to have disappeared from the map. Despite its huge influence, his work is rarely discussed outside the specialist circles of French historical epistemology.

Complexity thinking in translation studies: In search of methodologies

Strands of complexity thinking has been challenging the reductionist, linear paradigm of Western scholarship since its (rudimentary) origins in the late 1800s. Following chaos theory in the 1980s, current complexity thinking (complexity theory) is growing in influence in the natural sciences as well as in social sciences and the humanities. Examples of the latter two categories are the work of Byrne in social sciences as well as the work of Morin, Wheeler, Queiroz and others in the humanities.
